Calling all women to march together for International Women’s Day to celebrate our strength and courage.

Million Women Rise is an annual women only march in protest at the ongoing epidemic of male violence against women and children. MWR is organised by a coalition of women who are united by their outrage of the individual and institutionalised violence against women worldwide. It is an important event every year but even more so this year as many of the organisations and charities who support women who have experienced domestic violence and rape are having their funding slashed thereby reducing much needed services.

Why women need to march?

Woman’s right to live free from violence and / or the fear of violence has not been achieved. Women continue to be attacked and violated in many different ways, in our homes, on our streets, on our public transport, at our places of work. The government, the TV and newspapers do very little to address this issue; instead they often blame women for wearing the wrong clothes or being in the wrong place.

If you think this needs to change, then join us on a public demonstration to show those in power that it’s just not good enough! We need to show our mass dissatisfaction; we need to be strong together and in large numbers. Unity is strength; the voices of many are louder together than a single voice.

Daughters of Eve is thrilled to present an evening with three amazing African women who between them have been working to eradicate Female genital mutilation (FGM) and safeguard the Human rights of women and girls in Africa and the Diaspora for over half a century .

Amina M Warsame from NAGAAD, Efua Dorkenoo from Equality Now and Naana Otoo-Oyortey from Forward, will provide first hand knowledge and insights into the complex social, religious, cultural and economic issues which underpin the on-going practice of female genital mutilation in Africa, and how African women on the ground are now raising up and fighting back .The speakers will highlight the stories of brave African girls and women who everyday with little more than fierce determination and deep love for their communities, are leading the path against all odds and standing up against FGM.

After a 15-20 min presentation by each speaker, the floor will open to the audience to participate in an open discussion.

We are asking people to register their concern about the proposed funding cuts by London Council’s to specialist domestic violence, rape and abuse services delivered by Ashiana Network, ELBWO, EACH, Southall Black Sisters and Women and Girls Network.

The proposed cuts will mean that almost 2000 BAME women per annum from across 24 London boroughs will lose access to these highly reputable, trusted, specialist, life saving services which have been developed to meet the specific needs of the women and children they support.

The loss of these key services would have an adverse effect on BAME women and children.

On the occasion of the international day of elimination of violence against women.

Another year of violence against women in a world scale is over!

Only a week ago Zhian a 21 year old woman from Kurdistan (Iraq) was killed by her father in Sweden because she had divorced her husband.

There are reports that Shahla Jahed, an Iranian woman accused of murder by Islamic Regime of Iran, will be executed in the coming days!

The stoning of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani due to the extensive international protests was stopped but she will still be executed by hanging.

According to recent reports, there are at the moment 32 women in Evin prison in Iran waiting to be executed!

Every year there are thousands victims of honour killing in the world!

There are 9 million prostitutions in India that many of them have been kidnapped or traded from Bangladesh and Nepal!

In England every year there are 3 millions women victim of violence!

In the US every 2 minutes one woman is the victim of rape or sexual abuse!

In Congo in the last summer the armed men raped 300 women in 2 just months!

In Iran thousands of women are harassed by the security forces because of not complying with the Islamic code of cover!

The second most common cause of women's death in Finland is due to violence attacks of their

husband's/boyfriend's!

More than 80% of Afghani women are the victim of domestic violence, and thousands more are the victim of violence by the security forces and the Islamic fundamentalists!

Women’s trade has become a multimillion business in the world capital.

In only London 80,000 men purchase sex service weekly which adds up to 200 million pounds profit for those who run the market.

Violence against any woman is a reflection of violence against all the women in a world scale. The majority of women, experience the violence, degradation and suppression against themselves in a daily basis. The choice that a young girl has to escape poverty is either to sell her body or force herself into a loveless marriage with a man may be twice as her age.

Women can feel the taste of injustice as she is deprived of the right of custody of her children.

Another woman is sentenced to stoning because of expressing love for a man who she loves. And the other woman loses self confidence to go out due to fear of rape.

This is how the women have to pay the price for being a woman.

The violence against the women weather modern or traditional, openly or covert, domestic or social or by the state is carried out in a daily basis.

We will stand next to the struggles and resistances of all these women who are fighting against violence anywhere in the world! Our common language is the cry of our pain and our sorrow in order to declare that the violence against the women has no border.

We declare that we stand next to our Iraqis, Afghani, Palestinian, African, European, American … sisters and are determined to continue our march against state, social and domestic violence on women and will defend women’s right, until our victory and liberation from any kind of oppression and exploitation.

The struggles against the systematic violence against women in a daily basis can not be waged within the frame work of the international organisations who are linked with the powerful countries of the world.

The way to end the social, governmental and domestic violence is not going to come out of the votes of the representatives of the US congress or European parliament, the countries whose globalisation’s program and politic is the source of global violence.

The out of content expressions of ‘women and men equality’ which can only remains on the paper, can not eliminate the discriminations that women are continuously experiencing at home, in streets, at work or other places such as prison.

The mean of our struggle is not to follow the policies of the ‘International organisations’ who continue to award various prizes to those who are praising or justifying the anti-women Islamic Republic of Iran.

The means of our struggle and resistance is our militant unity which is based on the consciousness for struggle against any form of state, social or domestic violence on women in any part of the world.

Our struggle is the guarantor of our liberation from any form of violence.

Why a peace march in the east of DR Congo?

The eastern part of DR Congo has been labelled the rape capital of the world, with 250,000 cases of reported rapes and an estimated 1 million unreported cases. Up to two thirds of girls and women between the ages of ten and thirty have been raped since 1996.
Resource wars are ravaging the east of DR Congo, where an estimated 5.4 million people have been killed since 1996 (IRC, Crisis Watch). Armed groups from inside DR Congo and from neighbouring countries are fighting to control land rich in natural resources such as diamonds, gold, copper, uranium, tin, tungsten and coltan from which tantalum is derived. The ‘3T’s’ (tin, tungsten and tantalum) are found in everything on the British high street from mobile phones, laptop computers, and iPods to light bulbs. 80% of the tantalum used in mobile phones comes from DR Congo. These minerals are also traded every day on the London Metals Exchange.

We don’t want our light bulbs, laptops, mobile phones and iphones to fund the rape of women in DR Congo, to be the cause of human right abuses and force people to flee their homes and become refugees.

We stand in solidarity with The Centre for Conflict Resolution and the people of Bradford who are holding a vigil for the same purpose at the same time. Opposite Centenary Square Bradford(click for directions), 12noon – 1pm.

British women march in Democratic Republic of Congo in solidarity with Congolese women, issue call for end to violence

A Million Women Rise delegation of British women is to attend the Third International Action of the World March of Women in Bukavu (province of South Kivu) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as part of a global action to campaign for an end to violence against women.

The global action, from 14th -17th October 2010, involves women from 48 countries travelling to the DRC to express concrete solidarity with Congolese women and all women struggling against poverty and violence. One thousand women from the African Great Lakes Region are also expected to participate in the activities, culminating with a march for peace and ending violence against women on 17th October.

The UK delegation includes the Vice Chair of Rape Crisis (England & Wales), the founder of the Million Women Rise coalition, the UK Vice President of Women’s International League for Peace & Freedom (WILPF) and Congolese activists of COMMON CAUSE UK, the platform of Congolese women in the UK. The action is also supported by the London Feminist Network, Roshni Nottingham, the Women and Girls Network (WGN) and the Women’s Resource Centre (WRC) along with female MPs, academics and UK officials.

British women will speak at various planned panel discussions at this international action, protest against the conflict and demonstrate for peace and women’s rights, in addition to attending a memorial to honour Congolese women survivors and victims of violence.

Since current hostilities began in the DRC more than a decade ago, regional and local proxy wars and conflicts over mineral resources have generated one of the world's deadliest crises, with an estimated 5.4 million deaths [UN CS RES 1726, 1794 and IRC Crisis Watch]. The eastern part of the DRC has been particularly affected by war and has been labelled “rape capital of the world”, with more than 250,000 cases of reported rapes, nearly one million estimated unreported cases and 93% women reported to be living with domestic violence [COMMON CAUSE UK/DRC report 2009].

In 2010, the United Nations Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) completed 10 years of presence in the region. However, institutional and security fragility persists and multinational companies are benefiting from exploitation of natural resources, fuelling the conflict while breaching Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) guidelines without sanctions from UN Security Council permanent members, including the UK. [UN CS RES 1726, 1794 and Global Witness report].
Jane Gregory of Bradford Rape Crisis said: “Through the third international action of the World March of Women we are united as British women with our Congolese sisters in concern that our mobile phones, iPods, iPads and laptops are funding oppressive regimes and fuelling armed conflicts, human insecurity and rapes in the Great Lakes Region of Africa, while creating millions of internally as well as externally displaced populations, some of whom are refugees in the UK.”

CONSULTATION SEMINARS

Southall Black Sisters (SBS) and the End Violence against Women (EVAW) Coalition are holding a series of free consultation seminars to develop a UK-wide strategy on violence against (BME) women and girls. The seminars will be hosted by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC). These seminars will be crucial in informing the Westminster Government’s forthcoming strategy on violence against women, which is expected to be published in November 2010, and other policies around the UK. Please come along and share your experiences and ideas on the needs of BME women and girls so that they are reflected in this work.

Million Women Rise will be having the following all women actions

10th October 2010 - join a women-only march through central Manchester on 10.10.10 (10 October 2010), marking the anniversary of the first ever suffragettes meeting, which was held in Manchester more than 100 years ago.

Women and children protestors will meet at 2.30pm at Castlefield Arena following a route through the city centre and gathering at 4pm for a rally at Piccadilly Gardens.

Amrita Devi and the Khejarli Massacre

On a Tuesday (the 10th day of the month of Bhadrapad, according to the Indian lunar calendar, in 1730 AD, Amrita Devi, a Bishnoi woman was at her home with her three daughters, Asu, Ratni and Bhagu bai, when she learned that a number of people had descended on their otherwise sleepy village of Khejarli, named after "Khejri" (Prosopis cineraria) trees, found in abundance in the village. The people were a party of men sent by Maharaja Abhay Singh, the ruler of the kingdom of Jodhpur, in the Marwar region; their mission was to fell green Khejri trees to burn lime for the construction of the Maharaja's new palace and there was a lot of greenery in the Bishnoi villages even in the middle of the Thar Desert.

The martyrdom of Amrita Devi

Amrita Devi protested against the Maharaja's men who were attempting to cut green trees as it was prohibited according to Bishnoi principles. The malevolent feudal party told her that if she wanted the trees to be spared, she would have to give them money as a bribe. She refused to acknowledge this demand and told them that she would consider it an act of insult to her religious faith and would rather give her life to save the green trees. At that point she spoke these words:

Sar santey rookh rahe to bhi sasto jaan
(If a tree is saved even at the cost of one's head, it's worth it)

Having said these words she offered her head. The axes, which were brought to cut the trees, severed her head. The three young girls Asu, Ratni and Bhagu were not daunted, and offered their heads too.

The Khejarli Massacre

The news spread like wildfire. The Bishnois of Khejarli gathered and sent summons to their counterparts in eighty-three Bishnoi villages in the vicinity to come and decide on the next course of action. Since the supreme sacrifice by Amrita Devi and her daughters had not satisfied the royal party, and the felling of green trees was continued, it was decided that for every green tree to be cut, one Bishnoi volunteer would sacrifice his/her life. In the beginning, old people voluntarily started holding the trees to be cut in an embrace (as in the 20th century Chipko Movement).

Despite many valiant old persons sacrificing themselves, the Hakim (the royal party's leader), Girdhar Das Bhandari, taunted the Bishnois that they were offering unwanted old persons. Soon, young men and women (including the recently married) and children were sacrificing themselves in a similar manner.

There was pandemonium. The tree-felling party was badly shaken. With their mission unfulfilled, they left for Jodhpur to relay these events to the Maharaja. As soon as he learned about it, he ordered the felling of trees to be stopped.

By that time, three hundred and sixty three (363) Bishnois, young and old, men and women, married and unmarried, rich and poor had already become martyrs.

Khejarli Massacre aftermath

Honouring the courage of the Bishnoi community, Maharaja Abhay Singh apologised for the mistake committed by his officials and issued a royal decree, engraved on a copper plate ordering the following:

All cutting of green trees and hunting of animals within the revenue boundaries of Bishnoi villages was strictly prohibited.
It was also ordered that if by mistake any individual violated this order, he would be prosecuted by the state and a severe penalty imposed.
Even members of the ruling family would not shoot animals in or near Bishnoi villages.

Reclaim Power! Push for Climate Justice!
December 16, 2009 to December 18, 2009
On the 16th of December, at the start of the high-level “ministerial” phase of the two-week summit, we, the movements for global justice, will take over the conference for one day and transform it into a Peoples Assembly.

Our goal is to disrupt the sessions and open a space inside the UN area to hold the Assembly. The assembly will give a voice to those who are not being heard, it will be an opportunity to change the agenda, to discuss the real solutions, to send a clear message to the world calling for climate justice.

There will be a legalized starting point, which will be announced to the media and the police. From there, the climate justice bloc will move on towards the Bella Center. Affinity groups will make their way to the border of the conference area from various directions. The aim is for all groups coming from the outside to start entering the UN Area at 10am. At the same time, groups inside the Summit will start to disrupt the sessions and mobilize people to leave the negotiations and participate in the Peoples Assembly. The assembly will start at 12pm at the main entrance to the Bella Center inside the UN Area.

Reclaim Power! is a confrontational mass action of non-violent civil disobedience. We will overcome any physical barriers that stand in our way – but we will not respond with violence if the police try to escalate the situation, nor create unsafe situations; we will be there to make our voices heard!

The Peoples Assembly, in opposition to the false solutions being negotiated at the Climate Summits, will highlight alternatives that provide real and just solutions: leaving fossil fuels in the ground; reasserting peoples’ and community control over resources; relocalising food production; massively reducing overconsumption, particularly in the North; recognising the ecological and climate debt owed to the peoples of the South and making reparations; and respecting indigenous and forest peoples’ rights.

After 15 years of negotiations and no real solutions to the climate crisis, we say enough! No more markets based solutions, no to corporate greed and short term politics deciding our future! No to colonialism and the land-grabs taking place in local and indigenous communities!

In December, we, from our many different backgrounds and movements, experiences and struggles, will come together. We are indigenous peoples and farmers, workers and environmentalists, feminists and anticapitalists.
Now, our diverse struggles for social and ecological justice are finding common ground in the struggle for climate justice, and in our desire to reclaim power over our own future.

To plan further the action in Copenhagen with as many of you as possible, there will be Action Councils from the 11th until the 17th of december.

There will be short introductions of the action, updates of the situation, legal debriefings, space for affinity groups coordination, action planning and preparation, among others.

The dance of death and destruction must come to an end. We demand that war no longer be an option, nor violence a strategy, nor killing an alternative. The society we want is one in which every individual can lead a life of security - personal, economic, and social.
It is clear that the highest price is paid by women and others from the periphery - geographic, economic, ethnic, social, and cultural - who now, as always, are excluded from the public eye and dominant discourse.

The Million Women Rise Coalition expresses its sincere thanks to all the women who assisted in making the march and rally on 8 March 2008 in Central London a truly amazing, herstorical and successful event. Thousands of women joined the million women rise to end violence against women and the energy, love and defiance certainly rose. This was and is, just the beginning from now until we meet again on the 8th March 2009.

Our actions sent a clear message to decision makers that we are no longer prepared to accept rhetoric in the campaign to end violence against women and children.

We should all be proud of what we achieved on 8 March 2008. We will continue to work in solidarity with other women who share our vision for a world where women and children can live their lives free from the threat of violence. We take our strength from Maya Angelou’s words “Still we rise”.

We are disappointed that an incident involving a speaker who failed to get her contribution lodged in time has been misconstrued as an attempt to prevent her speaking about prostitution and violence. The speaker was invited in her capacity as a trade union official and we welcome the support of trade unions that share our aims and key message.

As a coalition we recognise that women who work in prostitution experience some of the most horrendous violence and abuse, and to them and all women who have experienced such violence, we offer our unwavering support and solidarity.

We also regret the actions of a few women, which resulted in violence, at the rally. As a coalition, we do not approve of acts of violence against anybody.

The Million Women Rise march and its related activities presents an opportunity for increasing dialogue between women. This we feel is the key to forging an indestructible unity between all women, which transcends all differences of nationality, ethnicity, religion, generation, and social position. Through dialogue we can learn from one another’s experiences and perceptions, which can only work to strengthen this ‘rising’ movement of women. Only by having open discussions can we further progress women’s position in this society, and work together to eradicate gendered violence. To this aim then, we would like to facilitate open dialogue forums around the UK and encourage all women to consider how they could organise a forum where they live

Thank you again. To all the women and girls that marched and gathered on International Women’s day 2008 in solidarity against male violence. Thank you to our stewards, women who had volunteered to be part of a movement towards a society that is free from violence, our amazing and inspirational speakers and comperes who shared their words and hearts, our 3 sign language interpreters, to the girl children the mothers, sistahs, aunties and elders who led, held and followed the march, and to the millions of women who have been murdered through violence, whose spirits we carry in our blood and whose hearts we could feel through the drums. Thank you drummers for swelling your hands to keep women on the march in rhythm with love. Thanks to the singers and musicians, artists and photographers, mobile movie makers, MWR crew. Thank you women past, present future for giving us the strength and courage that made this day possible because you inspired Million Women Rise, because some of us right now are free and we do this action because we can. Let’s meet again March 8th 2009 hopefully and as one sister says: to celebrate the elimination of male violence against women in all its forms. It will happen in our lifetime.

Three of my friends have been raped and one was sold to be used in child pornography repeatedly whilst growing-up, including torture and repeated rape”

The Million Woman Rise Coalition was started by women from Women and Girls Network and now has the support of a number of women’s organisations.

The coalition has no formal or informal links to any particular or specific feminist or political networks. The coalition is not partisan and brings together women who want to highlight the continuation of all forms of violence against women and demand that steps are taken to put an end to this.

We are gathering at Hyde Park on the North Carriage Drive (speakers
corner end) at 12pm on the 8th March and we will march down Park Lane,
Piccadilly Road, Haymarket to Trafalgar Square, where we will make
some noise, be together and rally with speakers from all over the
country and Internationally invited speakers include Angela Davis,
Mussurut Zia,Pragna Patel, Nicola Harwin, Lynne Franks, Michelle
Springer-Benjamin
and Akima Thomas plus other inspirational women including Women from
Palestine. The Rally will open with the sounds of drums and a positive
three minutes of womens energy.

There will be a venue with sauna, swimming pool and a space to be
from 10 am till late with a all women only fundraising celebration from 6pm till
1am at the 52 club Gower st, London WC1. 15min walk from

In some cases, girls as young as 10 are believed to have been groomed by youths pretending to be boyfriends. They are passed on and end up in prostitution.
Need any more reasons to join the campaign to stop violence against women? This recent news shows how trafficking is not only a cross-border issue...its happening today and within communities in the UK. Children who are born in the UK are being trafficked within UK borders...we all need to take action NOW to ensure that all women and children live without this violence, without this threat of male perpetrated abuse and sexual violence...

In 2002, following immense pressure, the
government introduced the 'domestic
violence rule' in immigration law, which
states that if a person married or living with
a settled partner can provide specific
evidence to demonstrate that she/he is a
victim of domestic violence and meet other
conditions, she/he can remain in the UK
indefinitely. But for a significant number of
women, the existence of the 'no recourse
to public funds' requirement in immigration
and welfare law, prevents them from
making use of the domestic violence rule
because they cannot access safe housing
or benefits to escape domestic violence.
The result is that they are faced with a
stark choice, leave and face destitution or
stay and risk their lives.
The 'no recourse' requirement bars anyone
entering the UK on the basis of marriage
from relying on public housing or benefits
until their immigration position is
regularised. This forces women into
positions of economic dependency on the
settled spouse or partner. The result is
sheer desperation on the part of the
individual and their advisors.

The Women's Rights Division of Human Rights Watch fights against the dehumanization and marginalization of women. We promote women's equal rights and human dignity. The realization of women's rights is a global struggle based on universal human rights and the rule of law. It requires all of us to unite in solidarity to end traditions, practices, and laws that harm women. It is a fight for freedom to be fully and completely human and equal without apology or permission. Ultimately, the struggle for women's human rights must be about making women's lives matter everywhere all the time. In practice, this means taking action to stop discrimination and violence against women.

Iran urged to free women's rights activist

Seven human rights organisations, including Amnesty International, have called on authorities in Iran to set aside a sentence passed on Iranian women's rights activist Delaram Ali.

She has been sentenced to 2.5 years in jail and a flogging for taking part in a peaceful demonstration last year calling for greater rights for women under Iran's Islamic legal system.

Ms Ali has been free while awaiting the result of an appeal, but she has now been told to give herself up by today so the sentence can be implemented.

Several other women have also been sentenced to prison terms because of the demonstration.

They are currently free waiting the outcome of their appeals.

Human rights workers say the Iranian authorities have been harassing members of the group because they have been attempting to collect a million signatures in support of a petition demanding the end of laws that they say discriminate against women.

Human Rights Watch is among the groups calling for Ms Ali's release.

Its Middle East spokeswoman is Sarah Leah Whitson.

"In this case they are actually going to put her in prison they say, to serve a two-and-a-half-year sentence, which is a new level of intimidation and threat and punishment that we haven't seen against these very young women's rights activists," she said.

if women do not come out to create a critical mass it is not that women do not care it is more of a reflection of the oppression, fear, the mass post traumatic stress we face as women, the lack of freedom, the spirit that has been worn down, by working, at home in the work place, on the street, debt, lack of child care, shame, guilt, credit cards, violence all the things that drain us and keep us under manners. We should never not do something just because we fear failure or buy into what keeps the system of oppression clocking over, divide and rule, greed and competition, bullying and undermining, mass grooming of women and girls to remain objects for men by men to do what they want, when and how. Total power and control. Even over us so called emancipated women our freedom is an illusion as long as the majority of our sisters in the UK and across the globe are suffering. We march and gather not just for our selves but also for the millions and millions of women, who have been murdered, beaten, hurt, incarcerated and raped over the decades. Our children here in the UK in poverty in the western world, Our children boys and girls globally in poverty, enslaved and starving , sold and bought , used in the sex industry. when will we rise up and say enough is enough. Elders here in the UK in poverty , freeze in winter. Globally forgotten and used forgotton women. Our earth trees are sold and bought, contolled to serve us rather than respect the life of thousands of years old , butchered rain forests . polutted rivers and poistioned wells , the rape of the earth is what we bear witness to. when will we rise and say enough is enough , maybe it is too late but I dont think so, to get her TO GET HER together we can save our selves and our children and the earth that allows us to love who we are and peace is a possible thing, i have heard the stories, that once we as humans lived in harmony with each other and the earth and animals...and women lived with dignity and love ruled the earth. the impossible is possible.

Our united issue is to end violence against women, further perpetrating violence against Women through no recourse to public funds, the global sex trafficking of women and children, The withholding of medication for the women and children suffering from HIV in Africa and across the world, violence against women in war, No-honour killing, forced marriage,female genital mutilation, racism, sexual exploitation, poverty, violence through control of single mothers, domestic violence, rape, pornography, mass grooming of women and girls.

International women’s day on March the 8th has gone by in the last ten years almost without any notice in the UK. Women who call this march have worked with women of all ages and the frustration in their voices when they ask me why? Why does the law blame us and not protect us. Where is the women’s movement? We have had enough of being lied to, humiliated, invisible, seen but not heard and not taken seriously.

We plan to come together on the Saturday 8th March 2008

As well as a million women marching through London and an all-international female platform of women artists, speakers, women elders,activists,campaigners ,womens music and dance. A solidarity prayer from women of all faiths to stop all wars and this epidemic of violence against women internationally.
